The Reef Sharks Squad is designed for swimmers who have progressed through the learn-to-swim pathway and are ready to continue their swimming journey in a squad environment while maintaining a balanced approach to their sporting commitments.
Reef Sharks swimmers continue to develop and maintain their skills across all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Sessions focus on stroke refinement, technique consistency, fitness, and confidence in the water, helping swimmers retain the skills they have worked hard to achieve.
This squad is ideal for swimmers who enjoy swimming and want to remain active in the sport while participating in other activities outside of the pool. Reef Sharks provides a supportive and encouraging environment where swimmers can continue improving without the pressure or commitment level of a performance-focused competitive pathway.
Throughout the program, swimmers will continue developing important swimming habits, including listening to coaching feedback, working within a lane environment, setting personal goals, and challenging themselves through a variety of skills and activities.
Reef Sharks swimmers are encouraged to take pride in their progress, support their teammates, and continue building confidence and enjoyment in the water. The focus is on maintaining strong swimming foundations, staying active, and creating a positive connection with the sport.
Our goal at the Reef Sharks level is to provide swimmers with the opportunity to continue swimming, maintain their skills, and enjoy being part of a squad environment while balancing other sporting interests and commitments. Reef Sharks creates a pathway for swimmers to stay involved in swimming and provides opportunities to progress further should they choose to pursue a more competitive direction in the future.

Threshers Squad is the first stage of our Competitive Squad Training Pathway, designed for swimmers who are ready to take the next step beyond stroke development and begin structured competitive training. Named after the powerful thresher shark, this level represents determination, adaptability, and the drive to continue growing as a swimmer.
Threshers swimmers have developed strong foundations across all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. They begin transitioning these skills into a squad environment, focusing on improving stroke efficiency, endurance, technique consistency, and overall swimming confidence.
At this level, swimmers are introduced to the expectations of competitive training, including working independently, following structured sessions, understanding lane etiquette, and developing positive training behaviours. They begin learning how consistent effort, focus, and commitment contribute to improvement and success in swimming.
Threshers swimmers are introduced to the fundamentals of competitive swimming, including starts, turns, pacing, race skills, and swimming to set distances and times. They begin developing an understanding of goal setting, personal improvement, and how to track their progress throughout their swimming journey.
While the focus remains on skill development and building confidence, swimmers are encouraged to challenge themselves, support their teammates, and embrace the teamwork and discipline required within a squad environment.
Our goal at the Threshers level is to provide swimmers with a positive and supportive introduction to competitive squad training. Through structured coaching, skill development, and progressive challenges, we help swimmers build the confidence, resilience, and commitment needed to continue progressing through our Competitive Squad Pathway.

Hammerheads Squad is the next stage in our Competitive Squad Training Pathway, designed for swimmers who are ready to increase their commitment, training frequency, and focus towards achieving personal and team-based swimming goals. Named after the determined and highly adaptable hammerhead shark, this level represents progression, resilience, and the pursuit of continued improvement.
Hammerheads swimmers are developing greater consistency across all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. They continue refining their technique, improving efficiency, and building the strength and endurance required to perform at higher levels of competition.
At this stage, swimmers increase their number of training sessions and begin to take greater ownership of their development as athletes. They learn the importance of consistent attendance, preparation, recovery, and commitment to achieving both individual and squad goals.
Hammerheads swimmers work towards clearly defined performance targets, including personal best times, technical improvements, and competition goals. Training begins to incorporate more advanced concepts such as race strategy, pacing, training intensity, and understanding how daily efforts contribute to long-term success.
Swimmers at this level are introduced to broader performance objectives, including goals aligned with club progression and qualification pathways such as Swimming Queensland, State, and National-level aspirations. They begin to understand the commitment and dedication required to pursue higher levels of competitive swimming.
Alongside individual development, Hammerheads swimmers continue to build strong team values by supporting their teammates, contributing positively to the squad environment, and understanding the role they play in collective success.
Our goal at the Hammerheads level is to develop confident, committed, and goal-focused swimmers who are prepared to embrace increased training demands and competitive challenges. Through purposeful coaching and a supportive team environment, swimmers continue building the skills, mindset, and resilience needed to progress through the competitive pathway.

Mako’s Squad is the highest level of our teen swimming pathway, designed for swimmers who are committed to pursuing their highest potential within the sport. Named after the powerful and fast mako shark, this level represents dedication, determination, and the commitment required to perform at an advanced competitive level.
Mako’s swimmers have developed strong technical foundations, training discipline, and competitive experience across all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. They continue to refine their performance through increased training demands, including morning and afternoon sessions, with a focus on developing the skills, fitness, and mindset required for high-level competition.
At this level, swimmers take greater ownership of their preparation and performance. They are expected to demonstrate commitment, consistency, and accountability while working towards individual, team, club, and competition goals. Training focuses on advanced race strategies, performance development, strength and endurance, and preparing swimmers to compete at higher levels of swimming.
Mako’s swimmers are supported in pursuing ambitious swimming goals, including qualification pathways and performance targets at club, Swimming Queensland, State, and National levels. Through dedicated coaching and a strong team environment, swimmers are encouraged to challenge themselves, support one another, and continue striving for excellence.
While swimming is a significant commitment at this stage, we recognise that our swimmers are also navigating some of the most important years of their education and personal development. Mako’s Squad proudly supports swimmers in balancing their sporting ambitions with senior school requirements, including ATAR studies and other educational commitments.
Education remains a priority, and we work closely with swimmers, families, and coaches to create an environment where academic success and swimming development can thrive together. We believe that developing well-rounded young adults is just as important as developing successful athletes.
Our goal at the Mako’s level is to prepare swimmers for continued success both in and out of the pool. By providing a challenging, supportive, and balanced environment, we help swimmers develop the confidence, resilience, discipline, and life skills needed to achieve their goals while building a lifelong connection with swimming.
